Significant Risk of Localised Extinctions
Threatened Species and Ecological Communities within the Project Area
Thirty-eight threatened plant species, twenty-seven threatened animal species, and five threatened ecological communities have been identified within the project area. All face significant risks of localised extinction if strip mining proceeds.
Three of these ecological communities, along with several plant and animal species, are listed as Critically Endangered - this is Australia's highest conservation status before extinction in the wild.
This will be the largest vegetation clearance in Victoria of any recent development despite the changes GCM have made to the project.
Below: A selection of just some of the threatened fauna and flora known to occur within the proposed mine site.
